Since the amendment of the Compulsory Automobile Liability Insurance Act on November 30, 2022, owners of vehicles that have not purchased compulsory automobile insurance, including car and motorcycle owners, will face expanded enforcement and penalties for traffic violations, such as speeding, illegal parking, and running red lights, whether detected through roadside inspections or photographic evidence. Offenders who are not insured will also face increased fines up to a maximum penalty of NT$32,000.

According to the regulations of the Compulsory Automobile Liability Insurance Act, if roadside inspections by the highway supervisory authority or traffic duties performed by the police result in violations of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, including accompanying reports, the highway supervisory authority can impose fines as follows: NT$3,000 to NT$15,000 for cars, NT$1,500 to NT$3,000 for motorcycles, and NT$750 to NT$1,500 for mini electric two-wheel vehicles. Offenders can be fined between NT$9,000 and NT$32,000.

The Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office reminds vehicle owners to check whether they have purchased compulsory automobile liability insurance by using the "Electronic Insurance Validity Inquiry" platform provided by the Taiwan Insurance Institute. If insurance is not in place, please contact an insurance company directly to arrange insurance or renewal to protect your own interests.
