ContentTo prevent drunk driving, Keelung Motor Vehicles Office today (June 23) published the complete names and photos of the first list of repeat drunk drivers on the Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office website. Keelung Motor Vehicles Office has indicated that publication of the information regarding repeat drunk drivers is meant to keep the general public alert that they must not drive while drunk, as well as to keep all road users safe.

According to the newly amended Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act, the new law regarding drunk driving was enacted on March 31, 2022. From July 1, 2019, in addition to the existing aggravated fine, driver license revoking, and road traffic safety lectures, the names, photos, and violations of repeat drunk drivers or those who refuse tests for the second time in ten years will be published.

Today, the first list of repeat drunk drivers includes one driver. A man named Qiu drunk and drove on November 2, 2010 and then again on May 28, 2022 and was pulled over and fined by the police. Taipei City Motor Vehicles Office has developed a publication zone for repeat drunk driving and test refusing on its official website. According to the central government’s regulations, information regarding the names, photos, and violations of the vehicle drivers will be published.

The new DUI law stipulates that the authorities can publish the names, photos, and violations of drunk drivers who commit the crime for the second time in ten years. Furthermore, passengers in the same vehicle are subject to a maximum fine of NT$15,000 as collective punishment. Keelung Motor Vehicles Office calls for drivers not to “drink and drive.” Don’t take any chances with drinking and driving. To avoid being punished for breaking the law, drivers should find a designated driver or take public transportation instead. A traffic accident while intoxicated would result in a lifelong regret.
